August 5, 2001 House Committee on the Judiciary Subcommittee on Immigration and Claims 2138 Rayburn House Office Building Washington, DC 20515 Dear Subcommittee Members: I am writing this letter at the suggestion of Congressman Tom Lantos (letter attached). This letter is being written for my wife. She is a former USDOJ INS employee. On April 11, 2001 and at the request of John Ashcroft’s staff, an investigation was initiated by the USDOJ INS Department of Justice’s INS Internal Audit Division (01X02908). On June 2, 2001 and in response to my correspondence, we were informed that the White House Staff was also beginning an inquiry and follow-up with the USDOJ INS. This subject is not frivolous and is well worth investigating. It is one of those rare instances where a Congressional committee can examine something in a bipartisan manner, without any negative implications and with very positive public fallout. My wife Caryl would write you herself, but she is disabled with Multiple Sclerosis. Her coordination isn’t the best. She is sitting next to me and asked me to act on her behalf by writing you personally. You can do a genuinely good deed and right one of the most grievous wrongs of Janet Reno’s US Department of Justice, during a vicious INS corruption cover-up that is gaining international attention. I might add based on the many letters we have received from current and former USDOJ INS employees, reprisal and cover-up seems to be endemic concerning employee efforts to stop internal corruption in this morally beleaguered agency....... .......For over twenty years, I’ve proudly told people that Caryl Leventhal is the reason why my heart beats.
